Loose, comfortable clothing and socks are preferable as the treatment can involve movement such as gentle stretching and rotations.
N.B. While stretchy clothing such as leggings can be suitable, please avoid wearing anything too firm, especially around the abdominal region (such as compression fabric), as this restricts the flow of blood, lymph and qi.
Clients generally express a feeling of deep relaxation, feeling refreshed and invigorated, and having a restful nights' sleep.
How strongly effects are felt varies from person to person. You will feel effects immediately and it will continue have an effect for a few days after.
It is possible to feel some healing effects in that time as toxins and emotions are released, and will need to be cleared through the elimination systems of the body.
It is always recommended to take it easy for the rest of the day at least, keep well hydrated and avoid stimulants, alcohol and strong exercise.
The number and frequency of treatments needed depends on each individuals' level of health, and chronic conditions will take more time to resolve.
Acute conditions may be relieved quickly, however it is important to understand that in Oriental medicine, they are seen as evidence of an underlying condition or weakness which may need time to nurture and strengthen.
Some clients include shiatsu as part of their ongoing health maintenance plan, or enjoy it as an occasional or regular self-care practice.
Changes to government policy as of April 2019 saw the removal of Shiatsu along with many other natural therapies from the rebate system. This decision is currently under review.
